    Governor's Office of State Planning and Budgeting
    The Governor's Office of State Planning and Budgeting (OSPB) advises the Governor on complex budget and policy issues. OSPB manages all aspects of the state's budget and seeks to leverage it to the benefit of all Coloradans.

    We are seeking an experienced individual to join our team as a Deputy Director for Budget. As part of the leadership team, the Deputy Director for Budget advances the mission of OSPB.

    Governor/Director goals: 

    The Deputy Director for Budget will be responsible for a comprehensive budget strategy to address the fiscal crisis, including operating deficits, stimulus, emergency spending, and federal resources.


    Management responsibilities:

    The Deputy Director for Budget will be responsible for the following responsibilities for the Office, among others:

    • Develop topline budget strategies and create decision tools for evaluating options

    • Ensure comprehensive and accurate scorekeeping for state, federal, and emergency funds

    • Lead statewide budget process & review to deliver the Governor's budget on-time and within guidance for principal departments

    • Develop communications and respond to press inquiries

    • Manage OSPB operations and budget

    • Direct a team of 5-6 professionals to accomplish the following: 

      • Manage General Fund balancing and baseline

      • Emergency funds reporting and auditing

      • PB database management

      • Asset/technology management

      • Liaise with statewide Budget Directors group

      • Review statewide common policies, including employee compensation 

      • Provide analyst training & development

      • Improve customer service in OSPB and statewide

    In addition to leading statewide budget efforts, this position has Department-specific budget responsibility for the following principal departments of state government:

    • Governor's Office

    • Office of Information Technology

    • Personnel and Administration

    • Revenue

    • Military and Veteran Affairs

    • PERA



    7-10 years of work experience is required.  

    Bachelor's degree is required, a graduate degree in a related field is preferred.  

    Preferred competencies include:

    • Conducting complex data analysis for senior-level executives under tight deadlines, and delivering effective presentation of analysis for decisions 

    • Advanced training in quantitative methods

    • Experience developing and managing budgets for large organizations

    • Experience managing teams and/or an office and delivering for customers

    • Effective oral communications

    • Effective written communication skills

    • Data management
    • Data visualization
