    Director of Budget & Strategy

    Located 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston, Sugar Land is a vibrant, diverse community with a variety of cultures, excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and high-quality services.  The City of Sugar Land has a unique and innovative culture that believes its success is achieved by the courage to do things differently and accept that failure will occur on the path to innovation.  The City is a full-service city with 873.8 budgeted full-time positions serving in 24 departments/offices and has an FY23 total operating budget of $282 million, including a $107 million General Fund budget, with a five-year CIP of $106 million.  The City has a AAA bond rating, reflecting its strong financial resiliency, fiscally conservative budgeting, and proactive responses to economic conditions.  

    The City seeks motivated, talented candidates excited about becoming part of a vibrant, empowering culture that encourages creativity, growth, and innovation.  In addition to being well qualified, the ideal candidate must have extensive knowledge of current finance and budget processes; best practices and performance management, including innovation through technology and data; experience with highly functional ERP systems; and a dedication and passion for public service.  The Director of Budget & Strategy reports to the City Manager through an Executive Director and is charged with advancing the City's commitment to financial stewardship, integrity and well-being of the City's budget, and the alignment of resources with intentional city-wide planning efforts. 

    Requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited university; a Master's degree is preferred.  Candidates must have seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal finance, city management, or a closely related field.  Requires experience managing large and complex budgets in a sophisticated and collaborative business environment, including four (4) years of management and supervisory experience.  A GFOA certification is preferred.  The successful candidate will receive a highly competitive salary with an excellent executive benefits package that considers the candidate's qualifications and track record of career success.
